Cumbria Yoga Foundation is delighted to announce themselves as a partner of the Live Longer Better in Cumbria programme which supports older adults and in particular those with long term health conditions to be more active.
Active Cumbria, the active partnership for Cumbria, hosted by Cumberland Council are delivering the national Live Longer Better programme in Cumbria.
A grant from The Reconditioning Fund will enable Cumbria Yoga Foundation to provide free yoga sessions in Keswick and Workington.
Free chair yoga sessions are delivered in partnership with Healthy Hopes in Workington and Keswick Senior Citizens Club. According to the NHS website ‘yoga practice helps people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains… depression and stress.’ This project will enable anyone to feel the benefits of yoga practice by providing accessible options for all.
Caroline Robinson, Chair of Cumbria Yoga Foundation said; “This project, whilst focusing on the physical aspects of yoga practice, will also bring people together in a safe, fun, friendly and caring environment.
We’re delighted to be partnering with Healthy Hopes and Keswick Senior Citizens Club who provide such important support in our community.”
Research shows that by 2043 over 31% of adults in Cumbria will be aged over 65. Active Cumbria Development Officer and programme lead for Live Longer Better in Cumbria, Clare Paling, said; “It is fantastic to have Cumbria Yoga Foundation join us as a partner in the Live Longer Better in Cumbria revolution. There is so much great work taking place across Cumbria through networks of organisations and providers who are really embracing the principles and aims of the Live Longer Better programme and offering new and enhanced opportunities for older adults to be physically active.”
Sandra Tebbs from the Keswick Senior Citizens Club Drop In Centre said “We are really excited to be expanding our range of activities to include this new seated exercise class led by a fully qualified instructor. In the winter months, it is even more important than ever to keep active to stay well, reduce the risk of falls and avoid social isolation.”
Mike Hawkins, group Facilitator at Healthy Hopes said “We are delighted to be able to host the yoga sessions as part of our weekly drop in group in Workington.
When our participating members return to the group for a cuppa the feedback has been very encouraging. Members are appreciative of the opportunity to experience yoga in a welcoming environment and recognise the health benefits that they can provide.”
