Stretching and strengthening

Cumbria Yoga Foundation is committed to creating a healthier, happier, kinder and connected Cumbria through local, accessible yoga sessions.

Caroline Robinson, Founder of Cumbria Yoga Foundation  explains: “Our mission is to improve wellbeing in every community in Cumbria. We are particularly enthusiastic about making the therapeutic benefits of yoga available to everyone, regardless of real or perceived health, cultural or financial barriers.”

Yoga focuses on strength, flexibility and breathing to boost physical and mental wellbeing. There's some evidence that regular yoga practice helps people with high blood pressure, heart disease, aches and pains (including lower back pain), depression and stress.

As a result of a newly funded project, three new yoga teachers have qualified to begin teaching in West Cumbria this spring. With specialist training in accessible yoga techniques, these freshly qualified yoga teachers will set up new sessions in West Cumbria to further expand the charity’s successful chair yoga programme. A key aim of the project was to increase diversity and accessibility in yoga spaces in Cumbria to further the charity’s work, to build safer spaces that are welcoming and accessible in the broadest sense. These teachers are trained and ready to be part of this commendable initiative.

The training, held at Evolve Yoga, Wigton, was made possible with funding from the Sellafield Sport & Physical Activity Fund and supported by Active Cumbria. With a grant sufficient to fully fund two West Cumbria-based candidates and subsidise a third, this project has significantly expanded provision in the west of the county.

Thanks go to the funders and to the newly qualified yoga teachers, Jamilla, Susan and Emma for dedicating so much of their time and energy to this project.

I am so grateful for this wonderful experience. I have been in and out of yoga for years but this opportunity has given me a chance to face what I have avoided within me and I have now found a brand new connection with myself, and this new beautiful experience I have with yoga. I’ve learnt so much. I can’t wait until I can share it with others.
